Am thinking about taking a gel on the swim. is there water at the turnaround for the second loop? Do the boats carry water? Im out there two hours.

Dusty,

We do not require athletes to exit the water before beginning their second loop. You are welcome to do so but will not want to cross the timing mat at your exit. However, if you are to leave any gear, etc. out for your use you may be called for abandoned equipment. You may want to get an idea from fellow triathletes as to what they do in this situation. The boats do not carry water.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dusty-

I did the REDMAN in 2006 and carried a gel inside my wetsuit. I stopped shortly past the 1/2 way point, treaded water while I ate it. I was awesome just looking around! As for water, there will be water available in the corral before the swim. I suggest taking advantage of that. You probably won't need water during the swim as lake water doesn't dry your mouth the way pool water does. But, I have seen swimmers stuff a small bottle into their wetsuit.

Good luck with your training!

i took a gel after 50 mins of swimming and felt better after less than 5 minutes; way before it could be fully absorbed. Swam pretty hard the next 25 mins. and felt good. No stomach problems at all. Looks like a race day strategy, thanks.

Rusty: There should be no need for food. Follow a normal food intake the morning prior to the race. I just did Louisville IronMan and did RedMan a couple years ago.

I ate 1/2 plain bagel, balance bar, banana about 2 hours prior to the race. Sipped on some gatorade about an hour before the start and about 30 mins prior took a gel. This is plenty to get through the swim in good shape.

if you have enough intake before the race it should be well enough for a 2 hour swim.

Once on bike, drink some water within first 15 mins and then some gatorade or something similar and eat a bar or gel within 30 mins and continue food intake. You will be fine.

Don't worry about trying to eat something during the swim--it is not needed and adds more stress. I am sure 99% do not eat or drink anything during IronMan distance races.

RedMan is an awesome race with GREAT volunteer--wish I was there!

Dusty: Physiologically, the glycogen which your body has stored based on your 24-48 hour pre race diet is a sufficient source for 2 hours of aerobic activity. High glycemic nutritional supplements for activities less that 2 hours in duration provide a pyschological boost by replentishing the depleted glucose of our brain. That is why confusion is an early sign of hypoglycemia. While race day is certainly not the time to try any thing new nutritionally, you may yet have time to experiment. I have done 14 long course races (9 half-5 full) but don't need that experience to tell myself that food + swimming = aspiration. Long course experience does tell me that there have already been 2 drownings in NAS events this year. I wish I were there as well. Salud!
