Hello, I am a college student and I was wondering if it is too late to start training for a full triathlon.

I am in good shape right now, I just finished the p90x program, and I was looking for the next challenge. I also bike fairly regularly, training right now for a few races this summer.

I was mainly concerned about the running and swimming aspects of this beast of a race. I don't really run or swim at all right now, but like I said I am in good shape, that p90x business is for real.

I am anxious to hear from some of you seasoned tri-athletes and anyone else who has done anything like this in the past. Thanks for your time.

Maybe you can. I would first decide if you really want this and believe the only way to know that is to bite a small piece off first and do a sprint distance. If you get hooked on this sport, you'll begin to determine whether your passions lie in sprint distances, olympic, half or full distances. Or maybe you'll choose all of the above. Whatever distance you choose, my advice is to respect the distance and do the homework necessary to have a good experience. I would strongly suggest you start short and build on that if you like. Consider joining a tri team and get some stroke instruction and a social network built. If you do get into this, remember a balanced life is your friend. Pace yourself - you have a lot of years to enjoy this sport.

I would definitely advise against attempting an Ironman on such short notice based on where you stated you are at with the three sports. If you want a challenge and a stepping stone, shoot for a marathon in the fall while learning to swim (a swim coach is a great idea). Triathlon is very different from P90X, but the mental toughness you learned will serve you well, no matter what you do.

Be careful running though, you will have to advance more slowly than I suspect you will want to, or risk injury. Running involves more than muscles, you also have to prepare your ligaments, tendons and bones, and those take longer than your muscles and aerobic system to adapt.

Maybe shoot for the half ironman followed a month or so by a marathon, that seems doable and plenty challenging.
