Does anyone know about the swim course for the 2009 race? I know it's a loop course. For the full distance, is the swim a 2-loop swim?

Aggie,

Each course is one loop for the Half and two for the Full.

For the full. After finishing the first lap do the swimmers exit the water and reenter or just continue on in the water?

Are the special needs bag at the transition area for the run and bike since this is a two loop race for each event? Can we have someone with additional stuff at another point on the course?

For swimmers doing the FULL Redman event, you do not exit the water after the first loop. "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming"

And, regarding Special Needs Bags: You will be provided with special needs bags for the bike and the run when you pick up your race packet. You will have access to this bags just past the 1/2 way point on the bike. In previous years, you had acces to your run special needs bag at the 1/2 way point on the run, but this year the course will be different as you will be running 4 loops. I know you will have accesss to it at the 1/2 point, but not sure on the 1/4. I'll look into that.

Well, since no one is answering the email box that is setup under the contact us section for athletes. I will try here.

I am inquiring about wave starts. I have a friend who is worried about hitting the cutoffs for the full distance. He is 55 and depending on what wave he is placed in could cost him up to 20 min.

The question is can he get placed in the first wave to ensure that he gets as much of the clock as possible?? Second question is - Do you exit the water after the first loop of course and re-enter or is it a continual loop??

The full distance is a mass start - no waves. So your friend will have the same amount of time for the cutoff as everyone else. And you do NOT have to exit the water after your first loop - just keep swimming onto your second loop.

The swim is a counter clockwise swim for all athletes.

The Redman swim has met the wetsuit legal requirements for all years in the past thus far. The website publishes historical water temperatures. However, having said that, I know you are aware that it is impossible to predict with 100% certainty until the race, what the water temperatures will be.

Sorry if it seems I'm beating a dead horse, but I have another question about wet suits that I have not seen addressed here yet. Acording to the USAT rules, wetsuits may be worn if the water temperature is up to 78 degrees. It also says that between 78 and 84 degrees, wetsuits may be worn by age groupers but they will not be eligible for prizes. Since it is much more likely that I will finish last than first, will I be able to wear my wetsuit if the temperature is over 78?

Yes, you are reading the USAT rules correctly... you may wear the wetsuit in temperatures above 78 degrees. However, as you noted, you would not be able to receive any award or prize for your placement if it were in the times that would otherwise merit an award.

This USAT rule is one way that the race "levels" the playing field, making it a fair and even race for all athletes. The majority of racers will not want to wear a wetsuit in those high temperatures, and will likely not, due to the heat being a possible contributing factor toward dehydration. But the USAT rule does allow you to wear it should you wish to.... foregoing any possibility of receiving any awards.

I hope this answers your questions... see you in September!

I like to think some of us enjoy a beautiful swimming lake with no motorboats etc. so much we want to be out there at least 2 hours. I am not swimming impaired so much as swim time priveleged. This is my first full swim and I look forward to checking in and encouraging any others in the "two hour" club.

Can someone post periodic updates of water temperature? I know it doesn't count until race morning, but it would be nice to track it as we get closer. Thanks

Some temps have been posted under the Swimming thread (they are from Sept 5th, 75.4, 75.7, 75.7, and 76.6 degrees F) through the 8th of September 2009.

I raced the full Redman in both 07 and 08. I wore a full sleeve wetsuit in 07 and overheated. The water temp gets really hot at the north end by the pump station. I raced sleeveless in 08 and was still warm but not over-heated. I Pre swam each year without neoprene and found the water temp to be quite comfortable without a wetsuit. The only reason I wore one each year was to not give up the time handicapp.
